University College Literary
and Athletic Society
The UC Lit, also known as the University College Literary and Athletic Society, is the student council of University College. It is the oldest democratically elected student government in Canada -- it was even created before confederation!
The council, which is composed of 29 representatives and executives, head the 11 different commissions of the UC Lit which each plan and run events and programming throughout the year.
The UC Lit aims to enrich the student experience of University College both academically and extracurricularly by hosting a wide range of events, from pancake brunches, career and academic support, coffeehouses, big formals like Fireball, to providing students with a central hub for initiatives within equity, sustainability, and mental wellness. Above all else, the UC Lit endeavours to make UC a home for students, both on residence and commuting.
Events, Services, and Initiatives
Event Programming | $1.70
Includes long standing UC events including but not limited to Fireball and Red & White as well as orientation programming.
Equity Initiatives | $0.46
Supports and creates opportunities for marginalized students, provides equity based resources, and organizes social action projects in the greater Toronto community.
Outreach Programming | $0.40
Creates an inclusive and welcoming culture within the college community through interactive and educational programming.
Arts and Culture Programming | $1.40
Includes social gatherings on and off campus, supporting multicultural engagement, and independent artistic expression. Programming can include coffee houses, talent shows, multicultural food.
Commuter Programming | $0.85
Creates a supportive and welcoming environment for students who do not reside on campus, and promotes interactions between commuter and resident students.
University College Spiritwear | $0.55
Builds a vibrant and dynamic University College community by offering a wide variety of spirit-wear items including but not limited to: sweaters, t-shirts, hats, mittens, phone wallets, and stickers.
Student Employment Opportunities | $0.70
Provides students with opportunities for employment within the college community including but not limited to: photographer, council secretary and speaker, and orientation organizers.
UC Clubs | $0.46
Supports student engagement within campus wide groups affiliated with University College such as the UC Dragonboat Team, United Nations Foundation-Girl Up, and Lions Club International.
UC Lit Levies
The Gargoyle | $1.50
UC’s satirical Newspaper, founded in 1954. They put out regular print and online papers with themes such as “Poetic Justice”, “Non Denominational Winter Holiday”, and “Space Disco” among others. Check them out at

UC’s literary journal and has been showcasing student art and literature for over 30 years. The Review is published twice a year and is always looking for submissions and/or people to be part of their team. Check them out at .
UC Follies | $0.50
UC’s student-driven theatre troupe and has been entertaining audiences for over 100 years with the goal to provide an inclusive space for students to express themselves on stage. From classical to contemporary, and plays to musicals, the UC Follies produces a variety of professional-quality shows and is always looking for students to get involved off and onstage. WUSC (World University Services Canada) Committee | $1.88
The WUSC Committee hosts events and initiatives throughout the year to raise awareness on issues facing refugees in Canada and around the world. The WUSC Program sponsors one student refugee each year to study at U of T.
Get Involved with the UC Lit!
The UC Lit is an amazing way to get involved in the community here at University College! Whether you want to get engaged by running for an elected position, want to help plan an event, or you just want to come out to one, we are always happy to have you be a part of the community.
Council elections happen every year in March, with by-elections for our First-Year Representatives in September. Our 11 commissions meet year round and are open to all UC students. The want to hear your ideas and have your help to make UC the best it can be.
